How to Create a Successful Instagram Bio & Why It’s Important.

Why is the Instagram bio important & how to write a perfect one? I’ll answer these questions here, offering an opportunity to gain followers, increase traffic, and up your Instagram game.

Why is the Instagram Bio important?

Easier said than done.

Why don’t we begin with an easy definition of what a bio is? Shopify states: An Instagram bio is a small summary, found underneath your username, about yourself or your business. In your Instagram bio, you can include a short description, contact information, emojis, and more, provided you keep it under 150 characters.

Having said that, we now understand that this is where you introduce you/ your brand to potential clients, growing personal connections, and ideally driving traffic to your profile and therefore to your brand. recommends to think of it as your business card, portfolio, and website home page all wrapped up into one.

How to Write a Great Instagram Bio?

  1. Clear message on who you are & what you do.
  2. Clear Call-to-Action (CTA).
  3. The goal is to convert any visitor into a follower.
  4. Make the format as interesting as possible.

Based on the above, I’d recommend the following:

  • First line: Who you are.
  • Second & third: What you do & USP (what makes you unique).
  • Last: CTA.

Personally, I think a good way to engage the reader is by using emojis, as that adds ease to read. It helps bring order into the amount of text. Think of it as bullet points, offering a structure to the content.

Make sure to use relevant keywords in regards to your business. In my case, these were “digital marketing” & “small business owners”.

Back in 2020 Instagram implemented a keyword search tool, additional to the hashtag search option.

Previously, you could only do this to find Instagram profiles based on keywords they used in their Instagram name, username, or bio.

This means that alt text and relevant keywords are more important than ever.

I’d also strongly recommend using the “Name” field on your profile to describe your service/product or your top targeted keywords.

Using this little change will increase the chances of your profile being discovered by potential new followers significantly. To find the ideal keywords, you should take a moment to brainstorm how your ideal customer would search for you. What is it you want to be known for?

Last but not least, make good use of the link option on your profile. Add a link to your website, landing page, or blog, and offer a strong call to action. To do this you need to make sure your profile is switched to a business or creator account.

This is all that I can think about for now. Let’s summarize:

  • Niche relevant keywords are important & make sure to mention why you are unique.
  • Add a strong CTA.
  • Emojis help capture the visitors' attention.
  • Make sure to use the name field to its full potential.
